Above: Working with a group of refugees in Clarkston, GA.

Above: In Berlin, I was allowed into the refugee camp and spend an afternoon sketching and chatting with incoming folks.

When we draw or paint together, we enter a shared zone of wonder that transcends the mundane. This has motivated me to sketch with others around the globe in city streets, on boats, in factories, in barren fields, rock quarries, refugee camps and wilderness areas.

The idea of strangers gathering like this makes me to suspect that the sketchbook may prove to be one of the great peacemakers of all time – or at least a canvas against which that peace is painted.

It's a start.
